Artificial intelligence is the field of making computer systems perform tasks that normally require human intelligence — understanding language, recognizing images, making decisions. The AI you use every day is powered mainly by machine learning, where systems learn patterns from data instead of following hand-written rules.
Algorithms that improve by finding patterns in data. The idea dates back to the 1950s; Arthur Samuel's 1959 checkers program is an early landmark [1].
Multi-layered "neural networks" loosely inspired by the brain. The 2012 AlexNet result made deep learning mainstream for image recognition [2].
Models that create new text, images, audio or video. The 2017 "Attention Is All You Need" paper introduced the transformer, the architecture behind today's chatbots [3].
Transformers trained on vast text corpora to predict what comes next. GPT-3 (2020) popularized the approach; ChatGPT (2022) brought it to the mainstream [4].

The field was formally named at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence in 1956, organized by John McCarthy and colleagues — the workshop that gave the discipline its name and agenda [Wikipedia: Dartmouth workshop]. Milestones since then include IBM's Deep Blue beating Garry Kasparov at chess in 1997 [IBM], Google DeepMind's AlphaGo defeating world Go champion Lee Sedol in 2016 [DeepMind], and OpenAI's public launch of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022 [OpenAI] — which is widely credited with starting the current wave of mainstream AI adoption.

Each guide carries a byline, an editor, and a "last updated" date. Our editorial policy and corrections process are public.
We say what models can't do, where detectors fail, and where the evidence is thin — no hype, no affiliate-driven rankings.
AI moves fast; guides are re-checked against vendor changelogs. Stale claims are corrected and dated.
